Artist's Statement
Painting mostly in oils and acrylics, my work depicts the landscape which is a constant source of inspiration to me. I have recently completed a series of studies based on the Welsh chapel, which to me, as an "outsider" seems to typify the Welsh landscape. I am passionate about trees, and fascinated in the role that they play in our landscape, and are therefore another motif which often appears in my work. I try to paint "en-plain-air" whenever possible; preferring the freshness and spontaneity it affords me. I usually carry watercolours with me and enjoy their adaptability for quick colour sketching.Since I was old enough to hold a pencil I have drawn and painted both the visual and imaginary. Although the subjects I paint include still life and figure drawing, I find landscapes especially stimulating, and I try to represent the landscape with the respect and dignity it deserves.
I also have a fascination for Folk Art, and Gothic patterns and designs, and have recently completed a series of paintings using the graveyard and church interior for inspiration. I have developed the ideas gained through observation into a sequence of abstract studies of tone, pattern and negative shapes, and intend to explore this area further in the future.
